The Mother-in-Law

I never got along with my mother-in-law. She thought I wasn't good enough for her son. I thought she was controlling and judgmental. We clashed constantly.\n\nThen she got sick. Pancreatic cancer. Six months to live.\n\nMy husband asked me to help care for her. I wanted to say no. I wanted to remind him of all the ways she had hurt me. But I looked at his face — tired, scared, desperate — and I said yes.\n\nThe first weeks were awkward. She was proud and stubborn, and she hated needing help. I was resentful and bitter.\n\nBut something shifted one evening. I was helping her with her medication, and she grabbed my hand.\n\n"I was wrong about you," she said. "You're a good wife to my son. A good mother to my grandchildren."\n\nI didn't know what to say.\n\n"I'm sorry," she continued. "I was jealous. Jealous that you had the relationship with him that I never had with my own mother-in-law."\n\nWe both cried.\n\nThe next three months were different. We talked. Really talked. She told me about her childhood, her fears, her regrets. I told her about mine.\n\nWhen she died, I held her hand.\n\n"She loved you," my husband said at the funeral.\n\n"I loved her too. It just took us both too long to say it."\n\nDon't wait. Life is too short for grudges.
