The Mentor

My first boss was a nightmare. She criticized everything I did. She made me cry in the bathroom. I came home every day wanting to quit.\n\nBut I didn't quit. And slowly, I realized she wasn't being cruel — she was being demanding. She saw potential in me that I didn't see in myself.\n\n"You're better than this," she'd say when I turned in mediocre work. "Try again."\n\nI resented her for years. But I also got better. My work improved. My confidence grew.\n\nOn my last day at that company, she called me into her office.\n\n"I know I was hard on you," she said. "But I knew you could take it. And I knew you had something special."\n\nShe handed me a card. Inside, she had written a recommendation letter that made me cry.\n\n"You're going to do great things," she said.\n\nI've had many bosses since then. Some were kind, some were terrible. But none of them taught me as much as she did.\n\nBecause sometimes the people who push you hardest are the ones who believe in you most. You just can't see it at the time.
