The Fire

Our house burned down when I was twelve. I lost everything — my toys, my books, the diary I kept under my bed. We escaped with nothing but the clothes on our backs.\n\nI stood on the lawn with my parents, watching everything we owned turn to ash. Fire trucks, neighbors in robes, the smell of smoke that would stay with me for years.\n\nMy mother held me tight. "We're alive," she said. "Everything else can be replaced."\n\nBut some things can't be replaced. The photo of my grandparents on their wedding day. My father's guitar from his college days. The quilt my great-grandmother sewed.\n\nWe stayed with my aunt for a year. My parents worked double shifts to rebuild. It was hard.\n\nBut we rebuilt. We moved into a new house. It wasn't the same as the old one. But it was ours.\n\nThat fire taught me something important: nothing is permanent. The things you love can disappear in an instant. So hold them close. Appreciate them now. Don't wait.
