The Soldier

My grandfather fought in World War II. He never talked about it. The only clue was the Purple Heart medal I found in his drawer when I was ten.\n\n"What's this?" I asked.\n\n"Nothing," he said, taking it from me and putting it back. "Just something from a long time ago."\n\nWhen he died, I inherited a box of his things. Letters, photographs, that medal. I sat down and read everything.\n\nHe had landed on Normandy Beach on D-Day +3. He was nineteen years old. He saw things no one should see. Killed people. Watched friends die.\n\nHe came home and married my grandmother. He became a mailman. He never missed a day of work. He never raised his voice at us.\n\nAnd he never, ever talked about the war.\n\nI understand now why he kept that medal hidden. Some things are too heavy to carry in the open.\n\nI keep the Purple Heart on my desk now. It reminds me that strength isn't about fighting. Sometimes strength is about coming home and living a quiet life, carrying your memories in silence, loving your family the best you can.
