Hope & Dreams
The Apartment
My first apartment was a tiny studio in a bad neighborhood. The windows didn't lock. The heater didn't work. There were cockroaches.\n\nBut it was mine. I paid for it with money I earned. I decorated it with thrift store finds. I was twenty-two and independent for the first time.\n\nMy mother cried when she saw it. "You can't live here," she said.\n\n"Mom, it's all I can afford."\n\nShe wanted to give me money. I refused. I needed to prove I could do it on my own.\n\nThat apartment taught me resilience. I learned to fix things myself. I learned to cook on a broken stove. I learned to sleep through sirens.\n\nI moved out after a year into a slightly better place. And then a better one. And then a house.\n\nBut I still think about that tiny studio sometimes. Not with nostalgia — it was awful. But with gratitude. It was where I learned that I could survive anything.\n\nEveryone should live in a bad apartment at least once. It builds character.
