How to Keep a Secret Without Letting It Eat You

There is a gap nobody talks about: between telling no one and telling everyone. Most secrets live in that gap for years, and the pressure of it shows up as insomnia, irritability, and a strange flatness that is hard to explain.

Writing is the middle path. It gets the secret out of the closed loop of your head without handing it to a person who might use it.

First, decide what kind of secret it is

Not all secrets need the same treatment. Ask what would actually happen if it came out:

  • It would hurt someone you love. Write it privately. Confession here is not honesty, it is relief purchased with someone else's pain.
  • It would change how people see you, but harm no one. This is the kind that lightens when told. Anonymous publishing is designed for it.
  • It is a crime or a danger to someone. Writing will not fix this. Talk to a lawyer or a professional, not a website.
  • It is shame, not fact. Most secrets in this category are things you did, or things done to you. The second kind is not yours to carry as guilt.

Write the full version once, then decide

Write it as though nobody will read it. Include the details you normally edit out — the ones that make you wince. The wince is where the pressure lives. You can always delete the file. You cannot un-live the loop.

I have never said this out loud. I am writing it here because a page cannot be disappointed in me.

If you publish it

Publish without your name, without identifying details, and without a timeline that could be cross-referenced. Read it back and ask: would my colleague recognise me? My mother? If yes, cut details until the answer is no.

And remember you can delete it. Untolden lets you remove a story after publishing — the record disappears. That is not a loophole, it is what makes the first honest draft possible.
