Love & Heartbreak
The Love I Found at 50
After my divorce, I swore I'd never fall in love again. I was forty-eight years old, living alone for the first time in twenty-five years, and convinced that romance was a young person's game.\n\nThen I joined a book club. Not because I wanted to meet people — because I wanted to read more. The first meeting was at a small bookstore, and there were twelve of us, mostly women my age. And one man.\n\nHis name was Thomas. He was sixty-two, retired, with graying hair and laugh lines around his eyes. A retired English teacher who loved books.\n\nWe started sitting next to each other at meetings. Then we started arriving early to talk. Then coffee before the meetings. And then, one day, he asked me to dinner.\n\n"I'm too old for this," I said.\n\n"Too old for what? Too old for happiness? Too old for connection?"\n\nI went to dinner. And then another. And another.\n\nWe've been together for three years now. We go on road trips and visit used bookstores and cook dinner together every Sunday.\n\nLove doesn't expire at a certain age. It doesn't check your ID at the door. It finds you when you're ready for it, even if you thought you never would be.
