The Teacher Who Believed in Me
I was a terrible student. Dyslexic, undiagnosed, falling behind in every subject. Teachers called me lazy. Parents called me difficult.\n\nThen, in tenth grade, I had Mr. Henderson for English. He was young, wore bow ties, and got excited about punctuation.\n\nOne day, he kept me after class. "I want to talk to you about your essay."\n\n"I've never read anything like it. Your ideas are incredible. The way you see the world — it's special. You have a gift."\n\nI stared at him. "But my spelling is terrible."\n\n"Grammar is a skill. But creativity, the ability to tell a story that makes people feel something — that's a gift. And you have it."\n\nHe spent the rest of the year working with me after school.\n\nI'm a writer now. Not famous, but working. And every time I finish a piece, I think of Mr. Henderson and the day he told me I had a gift.\n\nTeachers plant seeds that bloom years later, in ways they never see.
