Forgiveness
The Forgiveness I Couldn't Give
My sister borrowed money from me. Twenty thousand dollars. She needed it for her daughter's medical bills. I gave it without hesitation.\n\nA year later, I found out she used it for a vacation. She had lied to me.\n\nI was furious. Not about the money — about the betrayal. "How could you?" I screamed at her.\n\nShe cried. She apologized. She said her husband had pressured her. "It doesn't matter," I said. "You lied."\n\nI didn't speak to her for two years.\n\nThen my niece — the one with the medical bills — turned thirteen. She had a birthday party, and I wasn't invited. My sister called me.\n\n"She asked about you. She said she misses her aunt."\n\nI went to the party. I held my niece close, hating that I had missed two years of her life.\n\n"I'm sorry," my sister said quietly.\n\n"I know. I forgive you."\n\nIt took me two years to say those words. And when I did, I realized the forgiveness wasn't for her. It was for me. I had been carrying anger like a weight, and I was exhausted.\n\nWe're not as close as we used to be. Trust takes time to rebuild. But we're trying. And that's what matters.
